How to Prevent Tangled Hair While Sleeping

Do you regularly wake up in the morning, only to discover that your hair is a tangled mess? Even if your hair is straight and knot free when you go to bed, it may tangle while you sleep. Tangled hair is frustrating to say the least, but it's even frustrating when it happens at night. You'll have to spend a large portion of your morning combing or brushing it. Thankfully, however, you can prevent nighttime tangled hair by following a few simple steps.

Condition During the Evening

Your hair is less likely to tangle at night if you condition it immediately or shortly before going to bed. Conditioning, of course, moisturizes your hair so that it's less susceptible to friction. It adds various liquids and compounds to your hair, making it smoother. How does this help prevent nighttime tangled hair exactly?

Tangled hair is often the result of friction. When you sleep, the individual strands of hair will rub against themselves as well as your head and the bed linens. Conditioning your hair immediately or shortly before going to bed helps to protect it from the effects of friction by making it smoother. As a result, your hair will be better protected against tangling.

Use a Dryer Sheet

It may sound unusual, but running a dryer sheet across your hair before going to bed can help prevent it from tangling. Dryer sheets are designed to neutralize static electricity, which if left unchecked, can cause tangled hair.

Static electricity is the result of friction. When two surfaces rub against each other, they may create a static discharge. If your hair suffers from static discharge, it will have a mind of its own by flying in all directions. You can keep your hair free of static electricity, however, by using a dryer sheet. Just rub a dryer sheet across your hair before going to bed at night, and it will be protected from tangles associated with static electricity.

Comb During the Evening

Spending just a few minutes combing your hair during the evening can mean the difference between waking up with straight hair and waking up with tangled hair. Depending on the type of hair you have, you may need to use a wide-tooth comb. Wide-tooth combs are able to get unravel knots and tangles that isn't possible with narrow-tooth combs.
