6 Winter Hair Care Tips You Need to Know

It's no secret that the winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair. The combination of cold temperatures and dry air can make it difficult to manage your hair. You may have perfect hair during the other seasons, but when winter arrives, it can create numerous problems for your hair. While you can't prevent the seasons from changing, fortunately there are ways to manage your hair during winter.

#1) Trim More Frequently

You should consider getting your hair trimmed more frequently during winter. Split ends are more common during this time of year. The cold and dry air can cause the ends of your hair follicles to fray. A simple solution is to get your hair trimmed. A fresh trim will remove split ends so that your only healthy hair shows.

#2) Watch the Heat When Washing

When washing your hair, you may feel tempted to use hot water. After all, a hot bathe or shower is refreshing when it's cold outside. Exposure to hot water, however, will stress your hair. It will sap valuable moisture from your hair while subsequently causing it to frizz. You can still wash your hair during winter; just use warm water rather than hot water.

#3) Dry Hair Before Going Outdoors

Always take the time to dry your hair before leaving your home during winter. If your hair is still wet, it may freeze when exposed to the cold outdoor air. This can lead to breakage in which your hair follicles literally break apart.

#4) Use a Moisturizing Oil

Another hair care tip for winter is to use a moisturizing oil. Moisturizing oils -- argan oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, etc. -- will hydrate your hair while increasing its sheen in the process. You don't have use a lot of it, either. Applying a thin coat of a moisturizing oil throughout your hair will protect it from the dry winter air.

#5) Invest in a Bedroom Humidifier

Along with a moisturizing oil, you can protect your hair from dryness by using a bedroom humidifier. Humidifiers are devices that add moisture to the air in which they are used. With a humidifier in your bedroom, your hair won't dry out at night.

#6) Wear a Hat

Hats offer more than just aesthetic benefits; they can help you manage your hair during winter. Wearing a hat will essentially trap your hair's moisture. At the same time, it will protect your hair from the elements, which could otherwise cause dryness and other forms of damage.
