How to Keep Your Hair Straight After Straightening It

Does your hair frizz immediately or shortly after you straighten it? Whether you use a straightener or a flat iron, it takes time to straighten hair. Some women spend over an hour straightening their hair, whereas others spend 15 or 30 minutes. If your hair begins to frizz, you'll have to start all over again. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to keep your hair straight.

Begin With Dry Hair

Always dry your hair prior to straightening it. If your hair is wet or even damp, it won't straighten evenly. More importantly, your hair may sustain damage if you attempt to straighten it while wet or damp. You can still straighten your hair; just remember to dry it beforehand. Using a blow dryer, thoroughly dry your hair so that there's no lingering water in it, after which you can proceed to straighten it.

Use a Fine-Bristle Comb

You can use a fine-bristle comb to keep your hair straight. If you discover your hair is beginning frizz, brush through it with a fine-bristle comb. Fine-bristle combs, of course, have small and narrow teeth, making them ideal for straightening. As you run a fine-bristle comb through your hair, it will remove tangles and knots while promoting straighter hair in the process.

Treat With an Anti-Frizz Serum

There are hair products available to protect against frizz. Known as anti-frizz serums, they consist of nourishing compounds that strengthens hair cuticles. While anti-frizz serums are typically used to protect against frizz, they are equally effective at promoting straight hair. If your hair frizzes, it will lose its straightness. Conversely, protecting your hair from frizz will keep it straight.

Use Hairspray

Hairspray can help keep your hair straight. You can apply hairspray either before or after you straighten it. Once applied, it will "hold" your hair in place. Keep in mind, though, you don't need to use a lot of hairspray. Just a light and even coating will typically suffice. Using too much hairspray can dry out your hair while contributing to other problems, such as a dull tone and appearance.

Try a Dry Conditioner

Another product to consider using when straightening your hair is a dry conditioner. Like all conditioners, they are designed to hydrate your hair. The difference is that dry conditioners don't require wetting your hair. You can apply a dry conditioner when your hair is dry. When hydrated, your hair will maintain its straightness for a longer period.
