Going Crazy About Split Ends?

Some people are blessed with beautiful, rich, healthy, and shiny hair without having to try, others have to struggle to keep theirs manageable. Whatever category you fall in, everyone deals with split ends at some point. (Doesn't that make you feel better?) Split ends are a natural part of life that happens for a variety of reasons, some of which you can influence, so don't give up yet! Let’s talk about what split ends are, what you can do about them, and how you can prevent them.

Split ends are basically self explanatory as the ends of your hair split into more than one strand. So what causes these split ends? Essentially, the hair cuticle dries out or is damaged, and can no longer keep the hair together. You end up with little split off pieces that can make your hair look dull, dry, brittle, or frizzy. Many people with long hair have this problem because the natural oils from their scalp never make it down to the ends of their hair.

So what can you do when you notice that you have some split ends? Well, there is a general idea that you can repair split ends, but there isn’t great research or science that backs this up. Instead, the most effective way to get rid of split ends is to just go in for a trim. Book an appointment and see your stylist for a quick trim regularly if you want to really stay on top of taking care of any split ends that creep in.

If you are a fan of prevention, there are some pretty effective ways to reduce split ends in your hair. For one, quit using high heat on your hair. Hot blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons are going to dry out your hair and make them more prone to splitting. Another thing is to use high quality shampoo and conditioner that aren’t going to strip your hair of its natural oils. On that note, try not to shampoo your hair every day, either.

Consider using salon quality hair masks or going in for a deep conditioning treatment at your salon as well. This can help restore moisture and strength which will help keep your hair from splitting.
